Future-proofs vessels
FuelOpt complies with the IMO’s proposed EEXI and CII frameworks, and is compatible with the transition to new fuels and AI-powered vessel operations.
Does FuelOpt offer EEXI compliance?
The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is a coming amendment to the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations. In principle, the EEXI describes CO2 emissions per cargo ton and mile. It determines the standardized CO2 emissions related to installed engine power, transport capacity, and vessel speed.
The EEXI will be applicable for all vessels above 400 GT falling under the MARPOL Annex VI framework.
To comply with the EEXI guidelines, ship-owners and operators will need to adopt measures such as engine power limitation (EPL) or shaft power limitations (ShaPoLi), propulsion optimization, energy-saving devices, and more to reduce GHG emissions.
FuelOpt achieves compliance through ShaPoLi by setting an upper limit for shaft power output without any need for modification to existing machinery. When the system is activated, FuelOpt ensures that the vessel does not exceed the limit via any commands given during the voyage or as a result of varying environmental conditions. The power limit can be overridden in an emergency to allow access to full engine power.
In addition to being compliant with the ShaPoLi requirements, FuelOpt is also beneficial in that it minimizes the impact of engine or shaft power limitations on daily operations.
Does FuelOpt offer CII compliance?
The IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is a measure of how efficiently a vessel transports goods or passengers. It is given in grams of CO2 emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile, and the vessel is then given an annual rating ranging from A to E, with rating thresholds becoming increasingly stringent towards 2030.
The CII applies to nearly all vessels above 5,000 GT. It is expected that top-performing vessels will receive incentives for port calls and would not be at the receiving end of expensive market-based measures such as a carbon levy.
To achieve CII compliance, data gathered by FuelOpt and processed by Fleet Analytics is used to calculate how many grams of CO2 is emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile, which is then translated into the annual rating range.
For maximum benefit, FuelOpt should be paired with Fleet Analytics. This provides users with an established baseline against which to measure improvements.
Transitioning to new fuels
FuelOpt is a green technology that assists ship-owners and operators in achieving their energy transition strategies.
While the energy transition will undoubtedly impact the switch to zero-emissions shipping, alternative fuels are likely to have their own pertinent considerations based on production, availability, and cost. As such, fuel savings remains a key aspect of long-term operational strategies that are both cost-efficient and low on emissions.
The future-proof FuelOpt technology works regardless of the fuel type used. Even for vessels that are destined to run on multiple energy sources (such as wind power, batteries, LNG, etc.), FuelOpt can easily be adapted to future vessel upgrades. The system continues to ensure that control and optimal power is maintained as new power sources are added.
AI-powered vessel operations deliver the most energy-efficient voyages
Energy efficiency is the future of the maritime industry. Vessels and crews will have to carry out the most energy-efficient ship operations possible, and AI-powered solutions are one of the best means by which to achieve this goal. As a result, a growing number of ship-owners and operators are eager to harness AI-powered voyage optimization solutions that can adjust for changing weather conditions in real-time.
FuelOpt is key to successful AI-powered voyages, as it optimizes the propulsion line based on commands set by the bridge crew and/or an AI-powered voyage optimization solution. The system acts as a direct interface between the crew, the machinery, and the AI-powered solution, enabling all parts to work together to execute the voyage with maximum efficiency.
FuelOpt can be integrated with Route Pilot AI, our vessel operation support system. Route Pilot AI calculates the optimal journey based on data from previous voyages and historical sea conditions on specific routes. FuelOpt can also be integrated with other AI solutions developed by third parties.
