NSC choose Yara Marine Technologies to retrofit four vessels with open loop scrubbers

Background

Back in June 2019, the NSC project is a copy of Maersk Lima class. Originally the four vessels were part of the Maersk project, as they are on a long-term charter with Maersk. But after a request from Maersk, the NSC vessels were removed from the Maersk project in March 2019 and replaced by Lima class. NSC then decided to come back, and under its own auspices retrofit the four vessels with YMT Open-loop scrubbers.

The first delivery was scheduled only 8 months after contract signing. But with parts of the engineering already performed, the project got off to a good start and equipment could be ordered swiftly. The two towers, one for the main engine and one for two auxiliary engines, for each vessel were ordered from Yongsheng. The remaining equipment also came from well-known suppliers to YMT.

Challenges

In addition to the regular scope of supply for an Open-loop system, NSC asked Yara Marine if it could assist in solving the issue around sourcing the pipes connected to the scrubbers. Yara Marine recommends those pipes to be in similar high alloy steel as the tower itself.

And as these alloys are not commonly handled by the shipyard, NSC could not include them in their scope. So with the design from NSC’s engineering contractor, YMT together with tower manufacturer Verolme were able to provide the complete piping scope including process, drain, exhaust, and overboard pipes to NSC.

Accomplishments

The installation and commissioning coincidentally took place at the same yard, Xinya Zhoushan, as Maersk Lima class. The four vessels were retrofitted and commissioned in less than four months, during the summer and fall of 2020.

“Being at the same shipyard was, of course, a benefit for Yara Marine as arrangements with office space, commissioning spares, working routines, and all other important factors were already in place. And considering the tight project schedule, our logistics team did a great job to get all equipment to the yard on time.

At the shipyard, YMT’s project site coordinator and site manager were highly skilled and worked well together with yard personnel, resulting in a smooth transition between vessels and sharing lessons learned with the project team, NSC, and yard“, says Juliana Guarguati Ariza assistant project manager in charge of installation and commissioning.

Throughout the project, NSC has been very pleased with the performance of Yara Marine. The cooperation, flexibility, and support to solve whatever problem comes up have been highlighted and appreciated by NSC. YMT has really shown its best side in this project making it a success story.

Now all four vessels are back in operation, shipping containers all over the world. A business that is currently experiencing very good times, with freight rates surging and lots of containers waiting to be shipped.

So, with Yara Marine scrubbers onboard, these vessels should be able to reliably and safely operate on HFO, while focusing on getting containers to their customers on time.

The environment in proximity of the scrubber demister is highly corrosive. Therefore, design and material choice of pipes is crucial for successful and long-term operation. Yara Marine Technologies always recommend constructing the pipes with similar high alloy steel as the tower itself. These alloys are not commonly handled by the shipyard, and Yara Marine Technologies took prompt action to develop a special designed solution to solve the issue.

In collaboration with one of the tower suppliers and NSC’s engineering contractor, Yara Marine designed, developed and delivered the complete piping scope. Custom-made overboard pipes together with process-, drain- and exhaust pipes were provided NSC in only 3 months time.

Through excellent corporation with NSC and top-class suppliers, all necessary equipment was delivered swiftly and in time. All four vessels were retrofitted and commissioned in less than four months, including the installation of the complete piping scope.
