Open loop, closed loop or hybrid?
The Yara Marine SOx scrubber can be delivered as open loop, closed loop or hybrid system – depending on your specific requirements.
The SOx scrubber works bypassing the engine exhaust gas through chambers that contain a carefully generated “scrubbing cloud” of water. Harmful sulphur oxides (SOx) present in the exhaust gas are removed when they react with the high number of water droplets. The system is optimized to keep emissions within stipulated limits using the lowest possible energy consumption, regardless of fuel sulphur content, engine load or water alkalinity.
The Yara Marine SOx scrubber can be delivered as open loop, closed loop or hybrid system – depending on your specific requirements. With a hybrid scrubber system, you can switch from open to closed loop by a single touch on the panel controlling the system.
In open loop, sea water is pumped from the sea chest through the scrubber and the wash water is discharged to the sea. The natural alkalinity from the seawater neutralizes the wash water. Continuous monitoring at the inlet and outlet ensures that the discharged wash water quality is well within regulatory limits and has minimal impact on local waters and ports.
In closed loop mode, the wash water is recirculated through the scrubber, with a small amount of bleed-off taken from the loop for treatment. The water is treated by adding a small amount of alkali and removal of particulate matter. The treated water can be discharged or led to a holding tank when in areas of zero discharge. The Yara Marine SOx scrubber can operate on multiple types of alkali in closed loop mode, such as Magnesium Oxide, Caustic Soda or Sodium Carbonate.
Water treatment technology
Our water treatment systems can be customized to fit any vessel’s needs. The systems are highly automated, made of high-quality materials and based on well-established filtration principles, such as crossflow membrane filtration. This ensures optimal closed loop operation and a long lifetime.
