Exhaust Gas Cleaning Technology

Exhaust gas cleaning technology scrubs Sulphur oxides (SOx) from ship´s engine and boiler exhaust gases and reduces emissions emitted from vessels in coastal areas.

The technology, which is referred to as scrubbers, cleans the Sulphur oxides (SOx) from the ship´s engine and boiler exhaust gases by scrubbing the emissions generated from burning fuel. The Sulphur oxides are removed when reacting with a carefully generated scrubbing cloud of water, consisting of a high number of water droplets. With an exhaust gas cleaning system, it is therefore possible to continue operating on heavy fuel oil (HFO) after implementation of the IMO 2020 regulation.

An exhaust gas cleaning system consists of one or several scrubber towers installed onboard a vessel. With Yara Marine Technologies, it is possible to tailor-make the design of the exhaust gas cleaning system to fit the specific vessel accommodations. The most common types of scrubbers are I-type, L-type and U-type, depending on where there is space onboard to place the scrubber device. An exhaust gas cleaning system can be designed as open loop, closed loop or hybrid system.
