Ships are heavy emitters of sulphur oxides (SOx). According to an article published by freightweek, the new regulations mean a decrease in overall SOx emissions of 77%. On top of that, the reduction of SOx emissions contribute to reduce particulate matter (PM), which is harmful particles in the air coming from the burning of fuel.
