One week ago, we passed January 1st and the new regulations took effect.
Ships are heavy emitters of sulphur oxides (SOx). According to an article published by freightweek, the new regulations mean a decrease in overall SOx emissions of 77%. On an annual basis, we are talking of approximately 8,5 million metric tons of SOx reduced. On top of that, the reduction of SOx emissions contribute to reduce particulate matter (PM), which is harmful particles in the air coming from the burning of fuel.
Since the decision was first made 12 years ago and later confirmed in 2016, the regulations are now in effect. As an industry we have to work together to be part of the solution.
